Acyclovir (Zovirax) – Genital Herpes, Shingles, Cold Sore Treatment
Acyclovir is taken orally to treat the symptoms of the herpes simplex virus, shingles and chicken pox. While there is no cure for the herpes virus, the use of Acyclovir can help you control the duration and severity of outbreaks.
Genital Herpes Symptoms:
The herpes virus may cause changes in both your physical appearance and self-esteem. The virus causes sores that develop predominantly on or around the genital areas. General symptoms include swollen glands, muscle aches, fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, itching, and sensitivity near the area of the outbreak.
What do Genital Herpes Look Like?
Genital herpes have a very distinct appearance. During many outbreaks, small clusters of sores will appear. Skin near the outbreak area may also become inflamed. The sores can be painfully sensitive and itchy, and may also fill with blood or pus.
How to Take Acyclovir?
This medication should only be taken as directed by your doctor. Acyclovir is generally prescribed to be taken 2-5 times daily following a meal. Your doctor may adjust the dosage levels and frequency of use depending upon your individual situation.
How Does Acyclovir Work?
Acyclovir is a powerful anti-viral drug which targets the herpes simplex virus in body cells and inhibits it from further replicating. The end result is a lessening in the duration and severity of symptoms.
Side Effects of Acyclovir Include:
Like any medication, there are potential side-effects that can occur when taking Acyclovir. However, these side-effects are rare, and may include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- In very rare cases, the following serious side-effects occurred: anxiety, agitation, slowed-thinking, confusion, hallucinations, dizziness, trouble speaking, sleepiness, tingling, numbness of the hands or the feet, vision changes, loss of consciousness, seizures, swollen glands, pink or red coloration of urine, fever, sore throat or other signs of infection, yellowing of the skin and or eyes and dark urine—if you experience any of these very rare yet very serious side effects, STOP taking Acyclovir and seek immediate medical treatment.
Acyclovir Precautions:
Always speak with your doctor before using Acyclovir, and provide them with a list of ALL drugs that you are currently taking. Be sure to let them know if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Acyclovir. Those who are currently suffering from kidney disease may not be able to take this drug because it is processed in the kidneys. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or trying to become pregnant should inform their doctor so they can discuss the potential risks and benefits of using Acyclovir.
