Denavir – Cold Sore Treatment

Denavir (penciclovir topical) is an antiviral topical cream which is prescribed to treat and suppress cold sores caused by the herpes virus.

Signs of Cold Sores:

Cold sores can surface at any time and generally the following signs and symptoms occur when they do:

• Tenderness on infected area
• Noticeable reddening of the skin
• Legions or a blister that surfaces, and can ooze puss or blood and crust over Sensitivity to the area

How to Take Denavir:

Only take this drug as directed. Most often it will be directed to be applied to the affected area 2 times per day for four days. Avoid using any other topical creams or lotions while using this drug. Only use this drug on external surfaces of the skin. Make sure to ask your doctor about any questions you may have on the usage of this topical cream. If you realize that you missed an application, apply it as soon as you can.

How Does Denavir Work?

Denavir works by interfering with the replication of the herpes virus in cold sores, preventing it from spreading further and allowing the body to fight back and heal the sores fast.

Side Effects of Denavir Include:

Like any drug, there are some side effects which can occur. It should be noted that with this drug it is very unlikely that you will experience any side effects whatsoever.

Side Effects:

• Headache
• Numbness where the cream is applied
• Tingling where the cream is applied
• Subtle changes in taste
• Minor rash at the application site
• Minor irritation at the application site
• In very rare cases, an allergic reaction could occur, if you experience any sort of allergic reaction from taking this drug—STOP using it and contact your doctor immediately.

Denavir Precautions:

Mothers who are pregnant or nursing should consultw with a physician before using this topical cream. Always make sure to tell your doctor about ALL of the drugs that you are currently taking in order to avoid any potential complications.

Denavir Studies:

During the clinical trials this medication showed a tremendous success rate when used to treat external cold sores in patients. In most cases there were no side effects and the patients experienced an accelerated healing time, which on average spanned about 4 days.
