Making Nasacort Part of Your Allergy Treatment

Monday, August 18 2008

Allergy symptoms got you down? You may have seasonal allergies, or you may be someone who suffers from perennial allergic rhinitis, which basically means that you deal with a runny nose, sneezing, stuffiness and a general feeling of allergy-induced frustration and helplessness much of the year, if not all year. Nasacort can address and clear up your allergy symptoms, and make you feel like your old self again.

nasacortHow Nasacort Works

Nasacort nasal spray contains Triamcinolone, a corticosteroid that fights inflammation. Nasacort blocks inflammation in the nasal passages and helps reduce nasal secretions. In other words, it helps get the swelling down so you don’t feel like you’ve got cotton up your nose, and helps make it possible for you to just keep those Kleenexes on standby instead of active alert.

Allergies or Cold?

People sometimes don’t know whether or not to try an allergy medication because they can’t distinguish between allergy and cold symptoms. The table below highlights some of the differences between the two.

Seasonal Allergies, Perennial Allergic Rhinitis Cold
Signs and Symptoms Runny nose with thin, watery discharge; postnasal drip; sneezing; stuffiness Runny nose with watery to thick yellow discharge, sneezing
Onset Immediately after exposure to seasonal or indoor allergens, or year-round One to three days after exposure to cold virus
Duration As long as you're exposed to allergens, which may be all the time around the house Five to seven days

So, in other words, if you’re sneezing and blowing your nose for a month, you likely have allergies.

pollenAllergens, Seasonal and Otherwise

You may be allergic to pollen, which is produced nearly all year long with the advent of new grasses, leaves, weeds and flowers. And you can also be allergic to things in your house, such as dust mites, which pretty much live everywhere in the carpet and bed and aren’t going anywhere. You might also be allergic to pet dander, which can be controlled a lot more easily than pollen or dust mites.

pet danderA Few Tips to Minimize Pet Dander

Some people with allergies tolerate animals perfectly well, but other people are highly allergic and react badly to them. Here are a few ideas of what to look for in a pet, or how to deal with the allergens produced by the one you already have.

  • If you’re thinking of getting a pet, there are no such things as completely allergen-free dogs or cats, but there are certain breeds of dogs that are less allergen-producing. Yorkies, Cockapoos, Shih-Tzus and other breeds are said to be good bets for allergy sufferers, although that may vary from person to person. Unfortunately, cats are cats. There are no “hypoallergenic” cats, and cat allergen can linger for months or longer, even after a cat is gone.
  • It’s possible for animal allergens to be carried throughout a house in air currents. You should change furnace and air conditioner filters frequently; you may be amazed at the amount of Fluffy’s pet hair that you’ll find in a filter after just one month. And if your allergies, or the allergies of friends or loved ones who don’t visit because of the cat are too severe, you can consider installation of an air cleaning system.
  • Vacuum your floors and upholstered furniture frequently using a HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter on your vacuum cleaner.
  • Keep the cat’s litter box as far away from anyone with pet allergies as possible, like in a basement or a back porch.
  • Bathe your pet weekly – including cats. Most cats and dogs don’t bathe willingly or happily, but you’ll breathe easier.
  • Brush your dog or cat outside.
