Nexium (esomeprazole) is a powerful prescription anti-acid medication commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn; acid reflux), ulcers and erosive esophagitis.
Acid reflux is caused by the overproduction of stomach acid, which can back up into the lower esophagus when left untreated and cause heartburn.
Heart burn can strike when you least expect it to, causing a painful and long-lasting burning sensation. Nexium works to reduce excess acid that the stomach produces and in a few short weeks your heartburn will be under your control again.
Only take this drug as directed to by a doctor. Make sure that you take each dose with a full glass of water. If you miss a dose take it at the first chance you get and keep taking your regularly scheduled doses. Do not crush or chew the tablets, they are formulated to time-release in your system.
Nexium works by eliminating excess acid in the stomach.
It is important to always let your doctor know about ALL of the drugs that you are currently taking, even over-the-counter drugs, in order to avoid any drug interactions from occurring. Pregnant and nursing women should make sure that their doctor is aware of this before taking Nexium. People who currently suffer from liver disease may not be able to take this drug as well as anybody who is taking drugs containing digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, and Femiron).
