Prevacid – GERD & Heart Burn Treatment

Prevacid (lansoprazole) is an anti-acid medication which is commonly used to treat patients who suffer from acid reflux, persistent heartburn and or stomach ulcers.

What causes Heart Burn:

Heartburn is caused by the overproduction of acid in the stomach, which can then backup the lower end of the esophagus and cause the common symptoms that are associated with heartburn.

How to Take Prevacid:

Only take this drug as directed to by your doctor or your pharmacist. Take each tablet with a full glass of water. Avoid crushing or chewing the tablets, they are coated with a special time-release coating so they can be absorbed slowly in your system. If you miss a dose take it at the first chance that you get, and keep taking your other doses on schedule.

How Does Prevacid Work?

This drug is a PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitor) it works by reducing the amount of acid that the stomach produces.

Side Effects of Prevacid Include:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Dizziness
• Headache
• In rare cases an allergic reaction can occur which may involve the following symptoms: swelling of the lips, tongue or face, closing of the throat and hives. If you experience any of these rare yet dangerous allergic reactions, STOP taking Prevacid and seek immediate medical treatment

Prevacid Precautions:

It is important that you always let your medical care practitioner know about all of the drugs that you are taking. Make sure you let your doctor know if you are taking any of the following drugs: (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), and iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron), as they may have reduced effectiveness when taken with this drug. Women who are pregnant or nursing should make sure that they inform their doctor of this. Those who suffer from liver disease may not be able to take Prevacid.
