H1N1/Swine Flu update – November 3, 2009

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that flu activity is now widespread in 48 states. The number of doctor visits for influenza-like illnesses last week rose sharply for the third week in a row. Many regular flu seasons do not see this many doctors visits for flu-like symptoms on a weekly basis. CDC also reports that nearly all reported flu cases were H1N1-related and that flu-related hospitalizations and deaths continue to escalate nationally at a rate that is much more than expected for this time of year.

Because H1N1 vaccination is not yet readily available for everyone, many consumers have chosen to keep Tamiflu on hand in the event the virus is contracted.Tamiflu can be ordered online, 24 hours a day, at Viamedic.com. If you have questions about Tamiflu, please call us at 1-877-484-2472. The CDC states on its website that Tamiflu is an effective treatment for H1N1 and other current seasonal flu strains.

Tamiflu – Avian Flu (Influneza) Medication

Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate) is an anti viral flu medication that is prescribed to both prevent and to treat the symptoms of the influenza virus. Tamiflu has shown surprising success during the clinical trials where adults and children were administered Tamiflu while others were not. Adults showed a 30% decrease in the duration of the flu when given Tamiflu, and children showed a 26% decrease. Tamiflu can be taken to prevent the flu as well, if taken before contracting the virus. While the best way to protect yourself from contracting the flu is still by getting a flu vaccination—those only protect against certain strains—if you become infected with a different strain you will still get sick. Tamiflu is safe to take even if you have already had a flu-shot, and it still can help to prevent and lessen the duration of the flu virus in your system.

How to Take Tamiflu:

You should only take Tamiflu as directed by your doctor. Tamiflu is administered in both a pill-form and a liquid form with a dispenser for children. Tamiflu can be taken by both adults and children age 1 and older. You must take Tamiflu either before contracting the flu or within 48-hours of becoming infected for it to be effective. Depending on your age and weight, your physician may prescribe a different dosage level. While you can take Tamiflu on an empty stomach, it is recommended that you take this drug after eating. Always ask your doctor about any important dosing questions that you may have.

How Does Tamiflu Work:

Tamiflu works by attacking the flu virus itself. The cells of the flu virus contain a protein called neuraminidase—which allows it to penetrate the cell walls and multiply—Tamiflu inhibits neuraminidase, not allowing the virus to break out of the cell, ultimately causing the virus to die. In most cases, during the clinical trials Tamiflu has shown significant ability to limit the replication of the flu virus when taken within 48-hours of, or prior to becoming infected with influenza. The Patients showed a significant decrease both in the duration of the virus itself and the intensity of the symptoms.

Side Effects of Tamiflu Include:

There are some side effects that can occur when taking Tamiflu. In most cases these side effects were uncommon. Make sure you tell your physician about ALL the drugs that you are currently taking—even if they are over-the-counter—to avoid any potential drug interactions.

Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • In rare cases, children taking Tamiflu experienced delirium, children should be monitored when taking Tamiflu
  • In rare cases, a skin reaction or allergic reaction occurred which may be potentially life-threatening—seek immediate medical attention if you experience this

Tamiflu Precautions:

Always ask your doctor whether or not Tamiflu is the right drug for you. Always let your doctor know about any drug allergies and about any drugs you are currently taking. Women who are expecting, pregnant or nursing should not take Tamiflu. Those who suffer from kidney disease, lung disease, heart disease, or those who may be allergic to any of the ingredients in Tamiflu may not be able to take this drug.

Avian Bird Flu Virus:

The Avian Bird Flu virus, best known for the HN51 strain, has currently infected about 375 known cases worldwide. While the virus will typically not interact with humans—lying dormant in the birds intestines predominantly—there are cases where the birds do become infected and die. Humans who come into interaction with these infected birds, their droppings or infected poultry are also suspect to becoming infected themselves. The WHO (World Health Organization) has readily endorsed Tamiflu as the most effective treatment for the Avian Flu currently available. While Tamiflu cannot kill the HN51 virus, it is effective in treating its symptoms, fighting the virus and lessening the duration and fatality rate of the virus.

1-23-2006-“Canadian Co. to Recycle X-mas Trees for Key Ingredient in Tamiflu”

Biolyse Pharma Co., based out of Ontario, CA is buying used X-mas trees to recycle them for the collection of shikimic acid found in the trees fir exterior, needles and spruce. The company already makes several key ingredients for other leading drugs including paclitaxel—which is taken to treat lung cancer in patients. Now the company is focusing on the extraction of shikimic acid, which is the primary ingredient in the popular flu drug Tamiflu. The CEO of the company, Brigitte Kiecken, believes that the time to start stockpiling in the case of a pandemic outbreak of the HN51 virus is now, and not after it is already too late. “It's an urgent matter, and we should be starting production—not once the pandemic hits, but before that," says Keicken, who is also the company’s chemist.
