Valtrex Overview
Valtrex (valacylovir HCl) is a once-a-day suppression therapy treatment for people suffering from genital herpes. The herpes virus simplex virus type 2 (HPV-2) associated with genital herpes cannot be cured. But suppression therapy can reduce the number of outbreaks by disrupting the process by which the virus reproduces. In a one-year clinical study among people who experienced six or more outbreaks per year, one-half were outbreak-free after taking Valtrex for six months. After one year of suppression therapy, one-third of those participating in the test were outbreak free.
Valtrex is primarily used for suppression therapy, but can also be used for outbreak therapy (taken when an outbreak occurs). When an outbreak does occur, Valtrex is most effective when taken within 24 hours of the first sign of symptoms of a genital herpes outbreak.
Valtrex is a prescription medication intended for use by healthy adults. Tell your doctor if you have immune system problems, such as those associated with advanced HIV disease, or a bone marrow or kidney transplant.
There is no cure for herpes, so even with treatment, you can still pass herpes on to your partner. Although Valtrex has been shown to reduce the risk of passing genital herpes on to a partner, sexual contact should be avoided during outbreaks and safe sex should always be practiced between outbreaks.
If you are considering trying Valtrex you will need to share your medical history with a doctor so that it can be determined whether Valtrex is an appropriate treatment for you. Common side effects include headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness and vomiting. You must take Valtrex exactly as directed.
